Smallholding Stories

Main Content Inline Small

Meet the Youngers - Fergus, Alison and 1 year old Katie - who live in Glenbarr, on the Mull of Kintyre and have a passion for local produce. The local village shop stocks beef and lamb from surrounding farms and Fergus promotes the very best of 'Food From Argyll'.

They knew they wanted to rear pigs but weren't sure where to start although, they fancied some Saddleback/Tamworth crosses. Electric Fencing Direct's video guide by pig expert Clem Jackson - "Pig Rearing" gave them some useful tips on how to keep pigs secure. Alison now loves her pigs, "it saves me weeding... we use them on different plots to clear ground for planting our veg." Electric fencing for them is a must "not only do we need to keep the dog and baby out and the pigs in but we are right in the middle of the village - and 3 doors down the street is a plant nursery - we would be ostracised if they escaped and got into their stock..." says Alison.
